چکیده

Despite global and regional health crises, global life expectancy has increased continuously and substantially over the past 40 years. This is associated with an increase in incidence of age-related diseases, such as ischemic stroke and has an important socio-economic impact. There is a growing demandto have more effective treatments to reduce disability and improve the outcome of stroke patients. We reviewed the latest advances on neurorehabilitation and the new trends in this field. We provide practicing neurology and rehabilitation clinicians with a review of concepts of neuroplasticity, engagement, enriched environments, smart robotics, neuroelectronic devices and explain how they could be linked and applied in daily practise. Also, we review pharmacological interventions with a direct effect in neurorehabilitation. We conclude that there is some degree of evidence suggesting a possible positive co-adjuvant effect of citicoline in the rehabilitation phase of patients after stroke.

Validity of Modified Ashworth Scale as a Measure of Wrist Spasticity in Stroke Patients

Objectives: There are some controversies about the value of modified Ashworth Scale (MAS) for assessing spasticity. The goal of this study was to investigate if there is any correlation between scores obtained from MAS for wrist spasticity and electrophysiological recordings as the objective measure of spasticity. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 34 stroke patients were employed. Wris...

Old benefit as much as young patients with stroke from high-intensity neurorehabilitation: cohort analysis

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE In current clinical practice, old patients with stroke are less frequently admitted to neurorehabilitation units following acute care than younger patients based on an assumption that old age negatively impacts the benefit obtained from high-intensity neurorehabilitation. Our objective was to test this assumption empirically in a large sample of patients with stroke. ...

Quantifying cognitive-motor interference in virtual reality training after stroke: the role of interfaces

Globally, stroke is the second leading cause of death above the age of 60 years, with the actual number of strokes to increase because of the ageing population. Stroke results into chronic conditions, loss of independence, affecting both the families of stroke survivors but also public health systems. Virtual Reality (VR) for rehabilitation is considered a novel and effective low-cost approach ...

Rhythm perturbations in acoustically paced treadmill walking after stroke.

BACKGROUND In rehabilitation, acoustic rhythms are often used to improve gait after stroke. Acoustic cueing may enhance gait coordination by creating a stable coupling between heel strikes and metronome beats and provide a means to train the adaptability of gait coordination to environmental changes, as required in everyday life ambulation. OBJECTIVE To examine the stability and adaptability ...

Driving ability after a stroke: evaluation and recovery.

INTRODUCTION The ability to drive after a stroke has been recognised by many authors as a sign of independence and it is closely associated with proper social reintegration. However, it remains unclear how the driving ability of an individual who has suffered a stroke should be evaluated, and by whom. Neurorehabilitation can produce improvements in patients who have suffered a stroke, and patie...
